The perforated half-moon grates on the XL and L EGG models allow heat and flavor to reach the food and make it easier to cook fish or small foods like mushrooms, asparagus, shrimp or scallops that might fall through standard cooking grates. The half-moon grate leaves half of the cooking space available for direct heat.
